Exploring Indigenous Art of the Americas with Julio Gonzalez

The Iredell Arts Council is excited to welcome multimedia artist Julio Gonzalez for a special artist reception on Wednesday, June 3, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at The Old Jail in downtown Statesville.

A self-taught artist from Atlanta, Georgia, Gonzalez has exhibited his work in murals, galleries, and museums throughout the Southeast. His vibrant work often incorporates Mexican and Mayan design elements as he explores questions about contemporary life, values, and human connection.

Featured in the exhibition is Gonzalez's Scribes series, which draws inspiration from Indigenous art traditions of the Americas to explore stories of gods, magic, and dreams. Through these detailed works, he blends cultural symbolism with contemporary imagination, inviting viewers to reflect on heritage, storytelling, and the power of wonder.

At the center of Gonzalez's creative practice is a simple question: What if? He uses this idea to approach concepts from different perspectives and push the boundaries of imagination. Through his work, Gonzalez encourages viewers to embrace curiosity, rediscover a sense of wonder, and consider their connection to the world around them.

Join us for an opportunity to meet the artist, experience his work firsthand, and enjoy an evening of art and conversation.
